To celebrate Mimmo Jodice’s birthday we dedicate a special edition of Journal to one of the master of contemporary photography, who explores the world on the limit of time, crossing past, present and future, by presenting the film “Mimmo Jodice, Fotografia Italiana”.

Mimmo Jodice was born in Naples in 1934. He spent a tough childhood during the War in Rione Sanità. Self-taught, he approached photography in the Sixties and as a reporter he fixed his lens to events such as the eartquakes of Gibellina in 1968 and the outbreak of cholera in Naples in 1973. Since the beginning he always wanted to stop the time, by creating memories of what was happening in the present. In 1976 he decided to stop photographying people and work exclusively on experimentation. He then began working on materials and code of photography, using the medium not as a describing tool but as a creative one. In his work, the past breaks in the present: fragments of ancient sculpture, empty squares and deserted streets, leaving out, at least for that moment, his social and anthropological interest.

He had a key role in the cultural debate that led to the affirmation of Italian photography Internationally. In the 80s he met all the most important neo avant-garde artists who were living in Naples like Warhol, Beuys, De Dominicis, Paolini, Kosuth, Lewitt, Kounellis, Nitsch and many others.
In 1980 he published the book “Vedute di Napoli” beginning a new investigation into reality, working on a definition of an new urban space and landscape, by choosing a slightly visionary and metaphysical point of view instead of a documentary vision; this marks a turning point in his artistic language that he kept on ever since. From the mid-80s he began working on Attesa / Waiting cycle in which urban and natural landscapes without any human presence take out any reference to time and places. The only elements are common objects like chairs, poles, the surface of a rock that emerges from the sea, that emphasized the feeling of waiting, made eternal by photography.
His work has been exhibited in many Museums worlwide.

Per festeggiare il compleanno di Mimmo Jodice dedichiamo un’edizione speciale di Journal ad uno dei maestri della fotografia contemporanea, che esplora il mondo soffermandosi sulle soglie di un tempo indefinito, in cui si intrecciano passato, il presente e futuro, presentando il film “Mimmo Jodice, Fotografia Italiana”.

Mimmo Jodice è nato a Napoli nel 1934. Ha trascorso un’infanzia dura durante la guerra al Rione Sanità. Da autodidatta scopre la fotografia negli anni ’60 e come reporter lega il suo obiettivo alle vicende umane come il terremoto di Gibellina del 1968 e lo scoppio del colera a Napoli nel 1973. Posando sempre lo sguardo per fermare il tempo. Fondandosi sulla memoria di ciò che è accaduto. Nel 1976 decide di non fotografare più persone dedicandosi esclusivamente alle sperimentazioni. Inizia allora un lavoro sui materiali e sui codici della fotografia, usando il mezzo non come strumento descrittivo, ma creativo. Nelle sue opere il passato irrompe nel presente: frammenti di sculture antiche, piazze vuote e vie deserte, lasciando fuori, per il momento, il suo interesse sociale e antropologico.

È stato protagonista nel dibattito culturale che ha portato all’affermazione della fotografia italiana anche in campo internazionale. Ha vissuto a stretto contatto con i più importanti artisti delle neo avanguardie che frequentavano Napoli come Warhol, Beuys, De Dominicis, Paolini, Kosuth, Lewitt, Kounellis, Nitsch e molti altri.
Nel 1980 pubblica “Vedute di Napoli” dove avvia una nuova indagine sulla realtà, lavorando alla definizione di un nuovo spazio urbano e del paesaggio, scegliendo una visione non documentaria ma sottilmente visionaria e metafisica, alla quale resterà sempre fedele; questa ricerca segna una definitiva svolta nel suo linguaggio. Dalla metà degli anni ’80 pubblica la serie Attesa: paesaggi urbani e naturali privi della presenza umana tolgono qualsiasi riferimento di tempo e luogo. Gli unici elementi presenti, spesso oggetti di uso comune, una sedia, un palo, uno scolo che affiora dal mare, non fanno altro che accentuare il sentimento di attesa, che viene resa eterna dalla fotografia.
Le sue opere sono presenti nelle collezioni dei musei più importanti al mondo.
